Toni is a fourth-generation fisherman. He believes that his grandfather, Eichhof Kaspar, would have preferred to have been something other than a farmer and fisherman. ‘Most of all, he wanted to be a politician. He was a member of the cantonal council and also served as mayor for a year or two. He was well-read and, in a sense, an intellectual.’

For Toni, it was never a question of what he wanted to be when he grew up. ‘I finished the eighth grade and didn’t want to go into the ninth.

At the end of the summer holidays, they said, “You’re going to school now, and in the spring we’ll have an apprenticeship for you as a fisherman”.
